Introduction to Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis is the process of sending oneself into a deep trance, either through the guidance of a hypnotist or by using prerecorded audio or video tapes.

Once a person is in a trance they are highly vulnerable to external influence, especially words. Any suggestions that are made to a person in this state are acted upon by the person. This is a phenomena known as autosuggestion.

Autosuggestion works by communicating with the subconscious part of our mind and changing the fundamental way we think and behave. The subconscious controls every aspect of our body.

Your ability to ready this text right now without having to think consciously about how to read is all governed by your subconscious. Our subconscious controls our breathing, our heart beat, our digestive system - in fact every part of our body that functions in some way is controlled from the subconscious level.

When you learn a new skill and it becomes second nature, your subconscious is doing the thinking for you so that your conscious mind doesn't have to.

Whenever someone feels a certain emotion they don't want to, be it fear, anxiety or anger, their subconscious mind is triggering the emotion. Hypnosis alters the subconscious mind to prevent it from creating certain thoughts or bodily functions that we don't want. If there's a situation that you normally become nervous in, and your body pumps adrenaline, you can alter your subconscious mind using hypnosis to prevent your body from becoming nervous in such a situation.

Through the power of autosuggestion, a person can be trained to change all aspects of their behaviour. A person who suffers from anxiety can rid themselves of any triggers that cause anxiety. A person who has trouble losing weight can use hypnosis to alter their subconscious to not think about eating food. Likewise, a person who wants to quit smoking can use self hypnosis to force their subconscious to no longer think of smoking a cigarette.

Self hypnosis can be used to change just about every aspect of our behaviour. It's only been in the last thirty years, thanks to Dr. Milton Erickson, one of the pioneers of modern hypnosis, that hypnotism has been used clinically to treat patients and relieve them of a number of ailments.
