Applying covert hypnosis requires an understanding of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), as certain conditions must be met before a subject can be placed in an involuntary trance. Most courses that teach covert hypnosis will also teach the required components of NLP.
Covert hypnosis differs significantly from self hypnosis due to the willingnes of the subject. In self hypnosis, the subject usually has a genuine desire to be hypnotised. WIth covert hypnosis however the reverse is true, the subject has no idea that the hypnotist is attempting to hypnotise them, nor do they necessarily possess any desire to be hypnotised. In most cases, the subject will not even be aware that the person they're speaking to is in fact a hypnotist.
Covert hypnosis is often used discreetly by expert salesmen, advertisers, politicians, the media and charismatic figures. Anyone who seems to hold sway over many people may be utilizing covert hypnosis techniques. Covert hypnosis has been used in some form or another over the past century, however it was not until 1980 that it gained its real standing thanks to Dr. Milton Erickson, the leading practitioner of hypnosis at the time.
Since Erickson's time, covert hypnosis has become more widespread as the subject continues to gain greater authority and acceptance within both the scientific and general communities.
This form of hypnosis can be difficult to master. Unlike self hypnosis, covert hypnosis requires careful study, training and practice in order to apply effectively. Covert hypnosis is best taught through a course of some form where the student can progress at their own rate, as some techniques may take longer to master than others, depending upon the individual. Lots of real life practice is necessary for any student wishing to learn covert hypnosis.
